Above ground worm farming
A Worm Farm is a kit where the worms do much of the work. It can be kept in your garden, garage or patio. Alternatively, you can build your own from an old bathtub or trough. The container needs to have drainage holes, a lid to allow aeration and be located where it does not get too hot or too cold. At Edendale, we have large and small worm farms on display which we use for disposing of some of our waste.
They are a simple and easy way to turn kitchen and garden scraps into rich organic soil known as humus by using the worm castings which make great fertilisers and soil conditioners adding nutrients to the soil. Worm farms also generate a liquid fertiliser for plants.
You can put in kitchen scraps, garden waste, paper, grass clippings, tea bags, coffee grinds; in fact, just about anything that is organic.
In ground worm farming
The Worm Buffet is an easy-care in-ground worm farm that turns your scraps to soil. Perfect for installation into a raised garden or vegetable bed, The Worm Buffet is the ideal in-ground solution for recycling organic waste at home, to turn your food scraps into soil to nourish surrounding plants. Worms move in and out through the holes in the unit to digest kitchen scraps and deposit rich castings into the surrounding soil. You can allow worms that are naturally in your garden to do the work or add composting worms provided there is a good supply of compost to encourage them to stay.
