Eucalypts of the Diamond Creek
Next date: Saturday, 10 October 2026 | 10:00 AM
to 12:00 PM
Join Vicky Shukuroglou, author of the ACE Guide to Eucalypts Melbourne, for a unique and informative event. Arrive a few minutes early for the opportunity to purchase a copy of the guide, a useful companion for the walk.
This walk is designed to be an immersive and conversational experience, rather than a formal tour. Whether you are a complete beginner or already have an interest in Australian plants, the walk will be tailored to suit your level of knowledge and curiosity.
What you’ll learn
Moving from Edendale and along the Diamond Creek, we’ll encounter a range of eucalypt species responding to soil, water, and topography. Along the way, you’ll learn to read the landscape through its trees. You will learn to
-
Recognise different eucalypt species
-
Read bark, buds, gumnuts and leaves as pieces of an identification puzzle
-
Notice seasonal changes and how trees vary across the year
-
Read the landscape through its trees
-
Become more familiar with the ecosystem's eucalypts support — birds, insects, possums, koalas, soil life and mycorrhizal activity
This walk is not about getting everything “right”, but about building familiarity and curiosity, and to deepen your connection to place by seeing what is usually overlooked.
After the walk you can also visit the Edendale Indigenous Plant Nursery where many on the Eucalyptus species you will see are sold as tube stock seedlings.
This event is part of the 2026 Birrarung Riverfest. Celebrate the Yarra, Birrarung at one of 70+ events hosted over three weeks from 27 September to 18 October. Whether you enjoy riverside walks, cleanups, creative workshops, wildlife spotting or paddling adventures, there's something for everyone at Riverfest.
