Over the coming year, Nillumbik Shire Council will be running a series of sessions on nature restoration to support the effectiveness of our efforts.

The training is designed to empower environmental volunteers, local landholders and community members to learn more about, and help restore, the biodiversity of our region – covering topics such as site assessment, restoration strategies and monitoring.

Session 1

Fiona Cross from Edendale Nursery will lead a training session covering:

  • Site Survey and Assessment, including:

    • Accessing background information and mapping your site using resources from the Nillumbik Shire website and other sources

    • Identifying and recording flora and fauna

    • Understanding vegetation classes and conducting condition assessments

    • Zoning areas based on habitat quality and levels of disturbance

    • Using conservation management briefs

This session will provide practical tools and guidance for anyone involved in nature restoration projects. There will also be plenty of time to connect with fellow Nature Stewards and share your own nature restoration experiences.

Further sessions will be offered next year, covering topics such as:

  • Setting management objectives

  • Developing a nature restoration plan and schedule

  • Implementing restoration activities

  • Monitoring progress and evaluating outcomes
