Visible darning for fine knitwear and socks

Next date: Saturday, 26 September 2026 | 02:00 PM to 04:00 PM

visible darning for fine knitwear and socks

Learn how to repair holes in fine knitwear and socks using visible darning techniques.

This session covers assessing damage, choosing suitable yarns, and creating strong, neat repairs that will hold together across the life of your garment.

The session will teach visible mending techniques for creative and vibrant darns, plus discuss ways to stop moths from attacking your favourite woollens.

Attendees are encouraged to bring along an item of clothing to work on during the session and will receive advice and support in repairing it themselves. If you don't have an item to work on, we'll have some practice pieces available.

This session is free, but bookings are essential.

What to bring

In addition to an item of clothing, you might like to bring along a few things to help with your repair if you have them to hand:

  • a wooden darning mushroom, or a firm orange and a rubber band
  • darning wool that is the same weight as your item, in a matching or contrasting colour
  • a craft lamp or head lamp for good lighting
  • a magnifying lens and/or reading glasses.

We are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible event environment for all attendees. If you have accessibility or inclusion requirements regarding this event, please contact us about how we can help at environment@nillumbik.vic.gov.au.
