The Common (Indian) Myna is an introduced pest species that has become a major problem in Australia, including here in Nillumbik. An intelligent and aggressive bird, it out-competes local native birds and mammals for territory, food, nesting sites and preys on eggs, chicks and mammal young.

This talk will focus on the strategies the home gardener can implement to help reduce the population of Common (Indian) Myna's and will cover:

  • History of the bird in Australia including where it has become a pest and why
  • Identification – e.g. Common (Indian) vs. Noisy
  • Behaviour and Intelligence of the Common (Indian) Myna
  • Garden design elements to minimise Common (Indian) Myna and support indigenouse animals
  • Trapping and humane euthanasia
