Edendale Education is about celebrating the natural world, providing students with connections to the environment, and giving them practical solutions to real environmental problems. We want your students to leave Edendale feeling powerful, knowing that they have a role to play as future citizens in making this a better, more sustainable, world.

Our programs will motivate student learning about the natural world, with special emphasis on environmental sustainability in the beautiful surrounds of Edendale Community Environment Farm in Eltham. All of our activities are aligned to the Victorian Curriculum F-10, where sustainability is a cross-curriculum priority.

Our program is flexible. Whether your class is focused on a specific part of the curriculum or undertaking a unit of inquiry, whether it’s Geography, Science, Environmental Science, Biology, VCAL or a smaller Environment Team group, we can work collaboratively with you to ensure our activities fit the specific learning outcomes you require.

Each activity generally runs for about 45 minutes, and can be tailored to the Year Level and curriculum needs of each student group.

Choose from our activities as outlined below.

See our photo gallery.

Water

Activities at Edendale focus on water conservation and quality, the water cycle, catchments and how to protect this precious resource. Choose from:

  • Aquatic macro-invertebrates (identification, classification and interactions)
  • Tale of a creek (story and role play, water quality focus)
  • Edendale Farm tour (water conservation focus)
  • Extended water quality testing for Year 7 Geography

Waste

Activities focus on solutions to the ever-increasing problem of waste generated by humans in the environment, including minimising waste to landfill by separating our waste, including a quick recap of what goes in each bin, making environmentally-friendly purchasing choices and recycling organic waste. Choose from:

  • Soil matters (soil composition, composting and worm farming)
  • Consumption Down! (waste reduction hierarchy, smarter shopping and a brief recap of what goes in what bin, and why)
  • Fast Fashion (environmental impact of what we wear)

Biodiversity

Students gain a broad understanding of biodiversity and its related issues, as well as actions that can be taken to help support and enhance biodiversity. Choices include:

  • Plant local (lifecycles, propagation, planting - seasonal)
  • Aquatic macro-invertebrates (identification, classification and interactions)
  • Who Am I? Eltham Copper Butterfly (local endangered species focus)

Energy and Climate

Students investigate a range of issues related to climate change, renewable energy sources and practical ways in which individuals can reduce their energy footprints. Choose from:

  • Cut your carbon (reducing our carbon footprint) - this activity includes our human-powered bikes; students learn about energy and power, pedalling to generate electricity to cook popcorn in the microwave
  • Home green home (designing our buildings to reduce energy use)
  • Re-Generate (renewable energy sources)
  • Food footprint (environmental impact of what we eat, with an energy focus).
  • Jump into climate action (becoming more climate conscious in what we eat, buy, wear, and how we travel)
  • Young changemakers (what sort of changemaker are you? how can you make a difference?)

Food

Activities enhance students understanding of arable land as a precious resource, explore the impact of their “food footprint” and the benefits of growing our own food and/or buying locally.

  • Sustainable Edendale Farm tour (produce focus)
  • Food footprint (environmental impact of what you eat)
  • Soil matters (soil composition, composting and worm farming)
  • Future of food (food security, potential foods of the future)

Sustainable Living

This is one of our most popular programs, incorporating activities from the water, waste, food, biodiversity and energy themes. It draws together some of the key issues that help us to live more sustainably and reduce our ecological footprint. Choices include:

  • Consumption Down! (waste reduction hierarchy, smarter shopping)
  • Cut your carbon (reducing our carbon footprint, includes our human-powered bikes)
  • Plant local (indigenous plants – importance, lifecycles, propagation, planting)
  • Food footprint (environmental impact of what we eat)
  • Tale of a creek (story and role play, water quality focus)
  • Sustainable Edendale farm tour
  • Young changemakers (what sort of changemaker are you? How can you make a difference?)

Incursions

Our team will come to you!

In addition to our very popular excursion program, we also offer incursions to Secondary Schools if your school is relatively local to the Eltham area.

An incursion could be a one-off one hour session, or a rotating series of activities. For example, if you have three classes in your year level, we would come for several hours and run three activities.

Incursion activities

Our activities for incursion include:

  • Tale of the Creek (Story and role play with a water quality focus)
  • Food Footprint (Environmental impact of what we eat)
  • Future of Food (Biomes and food security)
  • Soil Matters (Soil composition, composting and worm farming)
  • Indigenous Plant Propagation and Planting (seasonal)
  • Fast Fashion (Environmental impact of what we wear)
  • Water Quality Testing
  • Young Changemakers (What sort of a changemaker are you? how can you make a difference?)

We can also support your school in setting up things like veggie gardens or composting.

We can teach to a particular theme or a more general sustainability program (eg. a water, a waste and a biodiversity activity).

If you have specific curriculum needs that you would like us to address, have a chat to us about how best to achieve this. We are very flexible and are happy to tailor what we offer to suit you.
